Per Cazo means ‘by chance’ in Italian, but after tasting their wines, it’s hard to believe they were simply made by pure luck. Winemaker Steve Glossner honed his craft at Paso Robles standouts like Justin, Adelaida Cellars, and Halter Ranch before starting Per Cazo Cellars in 2007, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that the wines are of a noteworthy quality. Here’s what our tasting panel thought about a handful of their current offerings:

Albarino

Per Cazo Cellars 2013 Albarino

Grape(s): 100% Albarino

Region: Edna Valley, Ca

Price: 25-30

Tasting Notes:

Fragrances of citrus fruits, white blossoms, and minerals rise up from a glass. Flavors of sweet lime, lemon, and grapefruit emerge on the palate along side traces of minerals. A welcoming acidity and round mouth-feel make it an ideal wine to pair with your favorite shell fish. 220 cases were made.

Albarino

Per Cazo Cellars 2012 “Tres Blanc” Blend

Grape(s): 50% Verdelho, 25% Chenin Blanc, & 25% Viognier

Region: Paso Robles, Ca

Price: 20-25

Tasting Notes:

A bouquet of peach, apricot, honeysuckle, and minerals greets the senses. The palate delivers flavors of nectarine, apricot, and passion fruit that blend with suggestions of orange blossoms, honey, and sweet spice. Bright, crisp, and floral, it’s a ideal wine to enjoy on a warm summer evening. Just 140 cases produced.

Per Cazo Cellars 2009 “Epigram” Blend

Grape(s): 65% Tempranillo, 25% Touriga Nacional, & 10% Souzão

Region: Paso Robles, Ca

Price: 35-40

Tasting Notes:

Aromas of cherries, plums, and boysenberries combine with hints of thyme on the nose. A sip reveals flavors of bramble fruit and cherry that unfold into whispers of spice, cigar box, and minerals on the palate. Lush tannins, inviting fruit, and a mineral highlight make this a lovely, approachable wine. 240 cases were made.

Per Cazo Cellars 2013 “Zin G” Blend

Grape(s): 75% Grenache & 25% Zinfandel

Region: Central Coast  , Ca

Price: 30-35

Tasting Notes:

Notes of cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate come together with accents of spice and spring flowers on the nose. With a sip, flavors of cherries, pomegranates, and plums move into nuances of pepper, minerals, and violets. A bright red offering plush tannins and a balanced acidity, open a bottle with a margarita pizza. Just 120 cases produced.
