It’s often difficult to find great bargains on Pinot Noir. Most producers have figured out that people, for whatever reason, will pay more for this particular varietal. Thus, if you’re willing to spend over $20, there are a number of quality choices. For a special occasion, I’m willing to do that. For an everyday bottle, I simply won’t. Lucky for me (and all of you, too), Castle Rock’s 2008 Monterey Pinot Noir isn’t a budget buster. I’ve seen it for as low as $10 at Safeway and up to $13 at other markets. Either way, for under $15, Castle Rock delivers.

Castle Rock 2008 Monterey Pinot Noir / Monterey

The wine has a bright fruity nose, with red berry aromas, blending with notes of plum, black currants, sweet spice, and fresh minerals. The palate is lush and fruity, as black cherry and dark plum flavors dominate the palate. A light, food-friendly wine, it can be paired with a variety of food, from grilled salmon to mushroom pizza or pork tenderloin.

Score: 87

Note: Castle Rock also has a Central Coast and Mendocino County Pinot Noir that look very similar. They might be good also, but I haven’t tried them yet. Keep that in mind when you’re shopping.
