At Sol Rouge winery, they have a special affinity with their grapes.   Cultivating fruit from the unique terroir of Lake County in northern California (and a little from Napa Valley), winemaker Bryan Kane crafts small-production wines that showcase the unique qualities of their vines. Here’s what our tasting panel had to say about a handful of their current offerings:

Sol Rouge 2015 “Gypsy Rouge” Blend

Grape(s): 70% Grenache, 13% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, 3% Counoise, & 2% Cinsault

Region: Lake County, Ca

Price: 30-35

Tasting Notes:

The nose brings together aromas of cherries and plums with expressions of clove and orange peal. A sip reveals flavors of blackberry, cherry, and plum that mingle among nuances of Asian spice cake and floral earth. Sanity tannins and a nice acidity make this a wine to pair with BBQ chicken pizza. 350 cases produced.

Sol Rouge 2015 Syrah

Tasting Notes:

Aromatics of blackberries, currants, and blueberries are accented by whispers of coffee and spice on the nose. The palate showcases flavors of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis, alongside allusions of spice, mocha, and minerals. A good body and a good intensity of flavors endear this wine to a hearty stew. 350 cases were made.

Tasting Notes:

Waves of cassis, blackberries, and black cherries interweave among notes of anise, dark chocolate, and toasty oak on the nose. Flavors of currant, blackberry, and dark cherry emerge on the palate, with undertones of anise, herbs, and toasty oak. Offering a good structure and nice layers, it’s a winner for any red meat. 300 cases produced.

Sol Rouge 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvingnon

Tasting Notes:

A mix of currants, blackberries, licorice, and toasty oak rises up from a glass. Blackberry, blueberry and cassis come up front and unfold into elements of smoky oak, anise, and vanilla on the palate. Dusty tannins frame the wine nicely, making it something one could lay down for a few years or enjoy now with a rib eye. 300 cases were made.

Sol Rouge 2014 Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes:

Fragrances of black cherries, cassis, and plums intermingle with dark chocolate and floral accents on the nose. The cassis and plum notes return on the palate, as highlights of violets, fresh herbs, and cedar come through at the finish. Classic Cab Franc character make this a wine to enjoy when serving a mushroom polenta. 125 cases produced.

A bouquet of apricots, peaches, ginger, and white blossoms rises up from a glass. There’s flavors of peach and apricot that play among whispers of orange blossom, spice, and honey on the palate. A nice acidity and lively flavors make this a good food wine. Pair with Thai dishes. 150 cases were made.
