Touriga is the name applied to a pair of Portuguese varietals that create exceptional wines prized for their richness and remarkable aromatics. Though U.S. labeling laws only allow the use of the generic term “Touriga”, in truth, this designation usually refers to either one or both of the two varietals known in Portugal as Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional. While both are important in the making of Port, they are also frequently used to produce excellent varietal wines. Touriga Nacional, perhaps Portugal’s finest indigenous varietal, is especially notable in this regard, often creating intense, multifaceted wines with vigorous tannins.

This is a wine that has plenty of personality. Sour cherry, red plum, and blueberry meld with highlights of spice, earth, and dark chocolate on the nose. There’s no let down on the palate. Bold spices and clove blend with bright plum and blueberry as well as hints of cocoa and earth. Anyone looking for something out of the ordinary should give this bottle a try.
