Our second flight consisted of Syrah from Arroyo Seco, Chalone, and the Santa Lucia Highlands. The Gabilan and Santa Lucia Mountains are key elements for growing Syrah in these regions. In the Santa Lucia Highlands and Chalone AVA’s, elevation helps to maintain warmer temperatures by keeping vines above the fog line (in most cases), and in the Arroyo Seco area, mountains provide shelter from afternoon ocean breezes so the grapes can ripen more effectively. In general, the Syrah from this flight had an earthy component as well as rich dark fruit flavors and a small kick of pepper. Among our guests, the Syrah from Mesa Del Sol was a favorite. Our panel members enjoyed the Hahn Syrah from the Santa Lucia Highlands.
