The grapes were picked by hand from two different sites: San Lucas Vineyard and Mesa del Rio Vineyard. San Lucas is the warmer site, producing a Syrah that is lush with ripe, fleshy fruit. Syrah from Mesa del Rio, a cool climate zone, has a subtle spiciness and greater depth and concentration. The 2006 growing season ran about two weeks later than usual but favorable harvest-time conditions allowed the grapes hang until the sweet spot of balanced acidity and fully-developed varietal flavors was met.

Rustic, yet soft, the nose offers a medley of aromas with burnt currants and blackberry flowing into notes of game and hints of earth. A sip delivers flavors of cherry, currants, ham, pepper, and vanilla. A juicy pot roast would make a very nice companion for a bottle.
